Letter from the

Archie E. McAfee

As educators, we all feel the pain when there is a school shooting, and we are saddened by the news that another senseless act of violence has disrupted the lives of innocent students, teachers, principals, parents and entire communities...

From the President

Manny Lunoff IV, Principal
Mathis High School, Mathis

WHAT TIME IS IT??? As we come into March, this time of year always reminds me of the the Chicago Bulls teams of the 1990s that were led by Michael Jordan. I remember all of the team getting into the huddle before the game started and Jordan yelled out to them, “What time is it?!?” In unison, the team responded by yelling back, “Game Time!” It was the entire team coming together to announce to everyone that we were ready to go into battle and come out victorious...

TASSP SUMMER WORKSHOP

June 13-15, 2012 | Austin Convention Center

TASSP: The "Heart" of Texas Education

From the kick-off celebration honoring our Texas Heroes to the Friday morning closing general session, you will not want to miss the TASSP Summer Workshop. This is a state-level workshop but it is recognized with national-level conferences because it is designed around two levels of commitment. The first commitment is to student success, and the second commitment is to offer training that enables and empowers the first through knowledgeable, focused, creative and passionate leadership. We believe that the principal and campus-level leadership team is the best-positioned leaders to ensure uninterrupted years of excellence in teaching for every student. To develop this well-trained team of instructional leaders, i.e., principals and assistant principals, both current and aspiring, TASSP offers a high-quality professional development program at the TASSP Summer Workshop.

Commit today. Take time to learn with and from your peers and from high-quality teachers who are leading the way in developing effective strategies for reaching all students. Investing in high-quality professional development is important to your ongoing call to be the instructional leader on your campus. Just as we expect our students to “show up” for class, on time and ready to learn, so must we as principals and assistant principals commit to our continuing education.

Please note on the registration form…No added fees for special or extended sessions.

TASSP removed the costs for special and extended sessions held during the Summer Workshop except for those sessions that have a catered meal and for the golf tournament. Based on the recommendation from workshop attendees, you can register for the TASSP Summer Workshop and all session are open to you. TASSP values your participation and has made this adjustment to the registration costs so that you can spend less to learn more.

So, come early….stay late. It is together that we learn and lead secondary schools in Texas. Make your hotel reservations and register today! We are excited about seeing you in June. Read Article...

Texas Association of Future Educators

The TAFE Teach Tomorrow Summit, held in San Antonio, was a huge success! Many students participated by conducting breakout sessions, teaching lessons to mock classrooms, presenting portfolios and competing in the speech contest. This intensive three-day learning experience provided more than $5,000 in college scholarships and a stepping-stone for Texas's Future Educators.

TAFE continues to grow, but it needs your help: we ask principals for their continued support by implementing classes in the Education and Training Career Pathway on their campus. These classes allow TAFE members a full co-curricular experience that will best prepare them for the classroom.

MIDDLE MANAGEMENT

By Tom Leyden

Middle Schools operate based on a philosophy that is mainly focused on the needs of pre-adolescents. Those needs are well documented. Anyone who has had the opportunity to work directly with middle school students understands that going from elementary school to high school is a quantum leap. However, a well-designed and implemented middle level school program enables students to transition successfully from the lower grades to the upper grades...
